Sagalassos: A Kaleidoscope of History and Heritage

Sagalassos is a fascinating ancient city located in the Burdur Province of Türkiye, near the city of Ağlasun. It was once a thriving city-state, and its ruins are a testament to its former glory.

The city was founded in the 7th century BC by the Pisidians, a native Anatolian people. Over the next few centuries, Sagalassos grew in importance and became a major center of trade and culture. In the 1st century BC, the city came under Roman rule, and it continued to flourish during this period.

 

Sagalassos was devastated by an earthquake in the 6th century AD, and it was never fully rebuilt. However, its ruins have been well-preserved, and they offer a glimpse into the life and times of this once-great city.

Some of the most notable features of Sagalassos include its Antonine Fountain, its Roman bathhouse, and its theater. The Antonine Fountain is a particularly impressive structure, and it is still in use today. The Roman bathhouse is also well-preserved, and it gives visitors a sense of the luxury that was enjoyed by the Roman elite. The theater is the largest in Türkiye, and it could seat up to 15,000 people.

Sagalassos is an important archaeological site, and it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Türkiye. It is a great place to learn about the history and culture of the ancient world, and it offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside.

The city is open to visitors 7 days a week. From April to October, it is open from 8:30 AM to 8 PM. From November to March, it is open from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM. Tickets cost 30 Turkish Lira (TL) for adults and 15 TL for students. Children under the age of 12 are free.

Directions to Sagalassos from İstanbul:

  1. Take the E80 highway west from İstanbul.
  2. Take exit 145 towards Burdur.
  3. Turn left onto the D320 highway.
  4. Follow the signs for Ağlasun.
  5. Sagalassos is located 10 km from Ağlasun.
